What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic water (BW) is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol acts as a preservative — it inhibits bacterial growth without killing existing bacteria outright (hence "bacteriostatic" rather than "bactericidal"). This is critical for peptide research because reconstituted peptides are kept in solution for days to weeks, during which time contamination is a real risk with plain sterile water.

Bacteriostatic water is the only appropriate diluent for most research peptides. Using plain water, saline, or water for injection without preservative risks bacterial contamination of your peptide solution and significantly reduces stability.

The rule: Always use bacteriostatic water (with 0.9% benzyl alcohol) for peptide reconstitution unless the specific peptide requires otherwise. Never use tap water. Never use plain sterile water for multi-use vials.

Why Not Regular Sterile Water?

Regular sterile water for injection (SWFI) contains no preservative. Once the vial is punctured and a needle introduced, contamination can occur. With bacteriostatic water, the benzyl alcohol prevents bacterial growth even after multiple needle punctures over the storage period of the peptide. For peptides you'll use over 3-4 weeks after reconstitution, bacteriostatic water is essential.

Step-by-Step Reconstitution Guide

  1. Gather supplies: Peptide vial, bacteriostatic water vial, insulin syringe (U-100), alcohol swabs
  2. Clean both vials: Wipe both rubber stoppers with separate alcohol swabs. Let dry 10-15 seconds.
  3. Draw the bacteriostatic water: Insert syringe into BW vial, invert, and draw the appropriate volume
  4. Inject slowly into peptide vial: Insert needle at an angle into the peptide vial, and slowly push the water down the side of the glass — NOT directly onto the peptide powder. This prevents denaturation from the force of the liquid hitting the powder directly.
  5. Swirl gently: Gently swirl the vial until the powder fully dissolves. Do NOT shake vigorously — this can break peptide bonds.
  6. Check for clarity: Reconstituted peptide should be clear to slightly cloudy. Significant cloudiness, visible particles, or color change may indicate a problem.
  7. Label and refrigerate: Mark the vial with the date reconstituted. Store at 2-8°C (regular refrigerator).
